Indonesia Adds Three New Provinces following Papua’s Provincial Expansion

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – With the recent expansion of the Papua Province, Indonesian provinces officially increased from 34 to 37 on Friday, November 11, 2022. The three new provinces are the South Papua Province, Central Papua Province, and Pegunungan Papua Province.

“Today, Friday, November 11, 2022, in Jakarta, I Minister of Home Affairs Muhammad Tito Karnavian, on behalf of the Indonesian President inaugurate South Papua, Central Papua, and Pegunungan Papua as provinces of Indonesia,” said Tito when inaugurating three Acting Governors and the three New Autonomous Regions (DOB) Papua.

The three Acting Governors are Apolo Safanpo as the Acting Governor of South Papua, Ribka Haluk as the Acting Governor of Central Papua, and Nikolaus Kondomo as the Acting Governor of Pegunungan Papua.

The regulation on the establishment of the three new autonomous regions was passed on July 25, 2022.

Tito also urged the three Acting Governors of the new autonomous regions (DOB) of Papua to maintain political and governmental stability during their office term.

“I have talked to them. I have conveyed a lot. Number one is political stability and governance,” Tito Karnavian told reporters after the inauguration event at the Home Affairs Ministry’s Office in Jakarta.
